Operation Christmas Child

October 27, 2009
6:00 pmto8:00 pm

The power of a simple gift, that’s what Operation Christmas Child is! Operation Christmas Child is a great way to bring you and Good News of Jesus Christ to children in need of hope all over the world. Christian materials are placed in each box and allows the Good News of Jesus to go to a home where ordinarily it would not be allowed in.

Operation Christmas Child will start again this fall.   A display with brochures will be placed in the Narthex of the church along with donation buckets for items for the shoe boxes.  Fill a shoebox from your family or donate items to be placed in shoe boxes.

Suggested school supply items for the boxes are pens, pencils and sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad set, writing paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books.  Suggested hygiene items are toothbrushes, toothpaste, mild bar soap placed in a plastic bag and/or wrapped in a washcloth, combs, etc.   Suggested toys are small cars, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yo’s, jump ropes, small Etch A Sketches, toys that light up or make noise (include extra batteries), slinky, etc.

Other items to be placed in boxes include hard candy and lollipops (double-bag all candy), mints, gum, t-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches and flashlights (with extra batteries).

Please do not include: used or damaged items, war-related toys, chocolate or food, liquids or lotions, medications or vitamins, breakable items such as snow globes, glass containers or aerosol cans.

Remember you can pack your own shoebox as an individual or family or donate items for the boxes we make up at church. You can also donate money for postage (Samaritan’s Purse suggests $7.00 or more per box).  Checks can be made payable to Zion and clearly marked for Operation Christmas Child or can be sent directly to Samaritan’s Purse (see the brochures in the narthex for mailing information) .

We invite you to join us on Tuesday, October 27th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm for a packing and wrapping night in the narthex.  If you have Christmas paper, scotch tape and scissors bring them with you.  We also need donations of empty shoe boxes.

To make your box more personal, include (in separate envelope in the box) a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family.  If you include your name and address, the child may write back.  Wouldn’t it be fun to hear back from a child!?

Let’s bring the Good News of Jesus and hope to children all over the world. If you have any questions, please contact Lori Nastvold.

ConFEST 2009

October 21, 2009
6:00 pmto8:30 pm

Zion Lutheran Church has again been asked to host ConFest on Wed. October 21 from 6:00 – 8:30 pm.  This event is for confirmation age students to come meet the Bishop, learn about the ELCA, our synod, other area organizations and have an awesome worship experience.  This is a wonderful opportunity for us to open our church to area congregations.  It will, however, take many helping hands to make this event run smoothly.  I am in need of people to be here the night of the event to monitor the nearly 400 students that will attend as well as a few who will be willing to help with detailed planning.  Please call Deb if you are willing to take part.
