Giving Tree
Watch for the Giving Tree in the Narthex of the Church
This is another way that Zion helps needy families in the community helps needy families in the community celebrate Christmas, and brighten the holidays of those in our congregation who are in the nursing home or don’t get out very much. As in the past, you remove the tag or tags from the tree, buy the requested gifts, wrap them, use the tag from the tree to mark the gift, and return it to the church no later than Dec. 21st. Some tags will be marked “purchase a poinsettia for $___” with an envelope attached. The poinsettias will be delivered on Wednesday, Dec 16, by youth and adult Christmas carolers. Money can still be turned in by Dec. 20th for these tags.
Share the true spirit of Christmas by donating to those who are less fortunate.
Operation Christmas Child
| October 27, 2009 | ||
| 6:00 pm | to | 8:00 pm |
The power of a simple gift, that’s what Operation Christmas Child is! Operation Christmas Child is a great way to bring you and Good News of Jesus Christ to children in need of hope all over the world. Christian materials are placed in each box and allows the Good News of Jesus to go to a home where ordinarily it would not be allowed in.
Operation Christmas Child will start again this fall. A display with brochures will be placed in the Narthex of the church along with donation buckets for items for the shoe boxes. Fill a shoebox from your family or donate items to be placed in shoe boxes.
Suggested school supply items for the boxes are pens, pencils and sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad set, writing paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books. Suggested hygiene items are toothbrushes, toothpaste, mild bar soap placed in a plastic bag and/or wrapped in a washcloth, combs, etc. Suggested toys are small cars, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yo’s, jump ropes, small Etch A Sketches, toys that light up or make noise (include extra batteries), slinky, etc.
Other items to be placed in boxes include hard candy and lollipops (double-bag all candy), mints, gum, t-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches and flashlights (with extra batteries).
Please do not include: used or damaged items, war-related toys, chocolate or food, liquids or lotions, medications or vitamins, breakable items such as snow globes, glass containers or aerosol cans.
Remember you can pack your own shoebox as an individual or family or donate items for the boxes we make up at church. You can also donate money for postage (Samaritan’s Purse suggests $7.00 or more per box). Checks can be made payable to Zion and clearly marked for Operation Christmas Child or can be sent directly to Samaritan’s Purse (see the brochures in the narthex for mailing information) .
We invite you to join us on Tuesday, October 27th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm for a packing and wrapping night in the narthex. If you have Christmas paper, scotch tape and scissors bring them with you. We also need donations of empty shoe boxes.
To make your box more personal, include (in separate envelope in the box) a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family. If you include your name and address, the child may write back. Wouldn’t it be fun to hear back from a child!?
Let’s bring the Good News of Jesus and hope to children all over the world. If you have any questions, please contact Lori Nastvold.

Thank you to everyone who contributed food or money to help the local food pantry. You can contribute to the food pantry anytime during the church year by putting food donations in the shopping cart in the Narthex. These items include the following:
- peanut butter
- tuna
- canned fruit
- cereal
- beans
- flour
- sugar
- soup
- spaghetti and sauce
- cookies,
- cake mixes
- mustard and catsup
- canned vegetables – especially peas
Garden produce would also be welcome.
Prayer list
Recently I was talking to a member of our congregation who felt that more care, needs to be given to members who are on our prayer list in the Sunday Bulletin, In our busy lives it is hard to take the time to do something extra for someone else. Remember that not all members have a support system (family, friends and co-workers) and may need extra care. As Christians, Jesus tells us we need to love our neighbors as ourselves. Love includes care for the sick or hurt. Our committee discussed the subject and decided that we would put that responsibility back on all Zion Members.
Here’s what we suggest:
- Check the prayer list weekly.
- Pray for that person.
- Decide if you would like to take it one step further by making a visit, sending a card, etc., helping that person with tasks they are unable to do, or making a meal for that person or family.
